Beta Upsilon has many awards that are given out during the year.  Below is a list as well as a description of each. Due Date: April 1, 2010

STTI Beta Upsilon Awards

To nominate a peer or colleague for one of the rewards below, please submit justification / rationale (one page maximum) electronically and return to 2nd VP (Barbara L. Wilson) @ Barbara.l.wilson@asu.edu. Awards will be based on completeness of documentation and must be returned by April 1, 2009.

Excellence in Research

Criteria to consider for selection:

Demonstrates excellence in research and scholarship

Demonstrates clear and compelling advancement of the science of nursing and/or healthcare

Participates in dissemination of information via conference presentations, symposiums, conferences, and /or publications

Serves as a mentor to others in the area of research and scholarship

Excellence in Education

 Criteria to consider for selection:

a.         Demonstrates excellence in teaching

b.         Advances the Science of nursing through clarifying, refining and/or expanding the knowledge base of nursing

c.         Promotes a theory/research base for nursing curricula and practice

d.         Influences scholarly development in nursing education, practice, and/or research through teaching

e.         Influences the professional practice of nursing and the public's image of nursing through excellence in teaching

Excellence in Mentorship

 Criteria to consider for selection:

a.         Actively shapes and promotes careers of nurses

b.         Freely shares own resources for the growth and development of individual nurses or groups of nurses

c.         Maintains the mentoring relationship with nurses over time

Excellence in Practice

 Criteria to consider for selection:

a.         Demonstrates breadth of knowledge in area of clinical nursing practice

b.         Develops creative approaches to nursing practice that contributes to quality client care

c.         Possesses clinical expertise and attributes of a clinical scholar

d.         Advances the scope and practice of nursing

e.         Serves as mentor/preceptor that inspires peer's practice of nursing

f.          Influences practice through communication

g.         Enhances the image of nursing through nursing practice

h.         Participates in community affairs, legislation, or organizations that affect nursing practice

Excellence in Leadership

 Criteria to consider for selection:

a.         Receives local, national and/or international recognition as a nursing leader in education, practice, administration and/or research

b.         Influences leadership in nursing through visionary and innovative approaches to leadership

c.         Creates an environment that enhances the image of nursing

d.         Participates in the development of nursing leaders and leadership

2010 STTI Chapter Awards Application

The Gary Brown Community Service Scholarship

 

The Board of Beta Upsilon, Sigma Theta Tau International, is pleased to announce the development of the Gary Brown Community Service Scholarship.  The purpose of this $1,000 one-time scholarship is to continue Gary’s legacy of community work to the underserved through service, practice, or scholarship.

 

Criteria:

§       Licensed RN and currently enrolled in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at ASU (RN to BSN or enrolled in one of the graduate programs)

§       A demonstrated long term, sustained commitment to the underserved or vulnerable populations in Arizona through service, practice, and/or academic endeavors

§       Completion of the application form, including a one page single-spaced typed essay providing information on the applicant’s background, future goals, and how the applicant has demonstrated service to vulnerable populations along with a description of the impact of his / her community involvement

§       Preference will be given to STTI members, although this is not a requirement of the award

 

The recipient will be awarded the $1,000 scholarship during the annual Spring Beta Upsilon Induction Ceremony, and asked to report back to the STTI Beta Upsilon members (at either the fall business meeting or a subsequent induction ceremony) on how the scholarship facilitated their educational goals and/or community work. The money can be spent at the recipient’s discretion.

Gary Brown Scholarship Application

Nancy Melvin Research Grant

Nancy Melvin
educated the first pediatric nurse practitioners in the Valley. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Nebraska and a doctoral degree in higher education from the University of Arizona. Nancy was a career nurse who set high goals, focused her work to achieve them and was a wonderful mentor to graduate students as a result. She was the first ASU nursing professor to receive an NIH research grant.
